Volunteering
There are two ways to volunteer with FirstMemories Texas. If you would like to serve in the hospital and interact with the families, there is official training and screening involved. If you would like to volunteer from home, there are many different things you can do to help.

- In the NICU & CVICU
- Training
- Commitment
- Volunteering from Home
Volunteers work directly with the families in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive care Unit) and CVICU (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit) at Texas Children’s Hospital (TCH).
Volunteers photograph little ones with their families, print photos and help families create a keepsake story card. Our volunteers bring their own cameras (digital) and most come with a love of scrapbooking.
Our volunteers who interact with the families need to possess a delicate balance of being comfortable around critically ill babies yet able to interact with the families by encouraging them to photograph and journal about their child despite the prognosis or outward appearance (due to medical equipment or medical condition).
If you would like to apply, please fill out our contact form and let us know that you would be interested in volunteering with FirstMemories Texas.
There is a 3 part Texas Children's Hospital Volunteer Services training:
- Online application and 90 minute training with short interview
- Health screening including TB testing
- Our area specific training in the NICU
After the Volunteer Services training, you will receive training in all aspects of our service offerings.
Age Limits:
- You must be 15 or older to volunteer at Texas Children's Hospital.
- You must be 18 to serve with FirstMemories Texas and enter the NICU.
We ask our volunteers to serve 2 days per month for a minimum of 3 months.

There are many ways you can help from 'Home':
- Pre-Decorate Story Cards to use for families who do not want to leave the bedside.
- Play with our scraps and create pages for the parents to use on their story cards.
- Pre-decorate small albums we give to families facing the loss of their little one.
- Help stamp our “feet” and other personal touches on the items the families receive.
- Pre-stuff our baggies with inserts and story cards and put CD’s in envelopes.
